May 01, 2004

It is a distinct honor. Each year, only two student-athletes from each Armstrong County high school get into the Armstrong County Sports Hall of Fame. There, they will stand alongside 30 years of the Armstrong County Sports Hall of Fame greats. Chosen by their coaches and respective schools, the student-athletes are typically selected according to athletic ability. This year's crop of inductees were honored with a plaque at the Hall of Fame banquet held April 25th at Laube Hall in Freeport.

This year's newest members from Alle-Kiski area schools in the Hall of Fame include: Apollo Ridge's Shannon Guthrie, daughter of John and Deborah Guthrie and a letterman in volleyball, basketball, and track; Freeport's Michelle Vascik, daughter of Ray and Judy Vascik, lettering in volleyball, basketball and track; Leechburg's Rob Mattu, son of: Bob and Joanne Mattu, letterman in football and baseball; Apollo-Ridge's Jarrod Miller, son of Randy and Tammy Miller, lettering in track and football; Leechburg's Melissa Geer, daughter of Robert and Cathleen Geer, lettering in volleyball, softball and cheerleading; and Freeport's Luke Westerman, the son of Mike and Kim Westerman, and letterman in football, basketball and baseball.
